Plans for Rental Reform Market for student housing faces risky chaos

UNITED KINGDOM: Students are in a state of confusion as government initiatives to restructure the renting sector raise concerns about the availability of housing at the beginning of each school year. (Reported by news source)

All student housing will be subject to open-ended tenancies under the plans, with the exception of purpose-built blocks. Due to this change, landlords can no longer guarantee that housing will be available at the beginning of each academic year, unless staying occupants have given notice to vacate.

According to recent information from the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA), 84% of landlords who rent to students are worried about the Government's plans.

53% of students living in rental homes in the UK do not reside in dorms or other university-provided housing, which makes up the majority of the student population.

The earliest such notice could be given to sitting tenants in order to afford safeguards would be during the final two months of a leasing agreement or during the tenth month of a 12-month fixed term.
