Government support for Cambridge South station plans

CAMBRIDGE: To enhance accessibility to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, the Department for Transport has approved proposals for a new train station. (Reported by news source)

The campus will be close to the Cambridge South station, which will connect it to places including downtown London, Stansted Airport, Ely, and Birmingham.

As part of its request for a Transport and Works Act order and presumed planning consent, Network Rail presented its designs to the Department for Transportation.

The estimated cost of the station and related infrastructure is £183.6 million. According to the department, "the plan would also strengthen the Cambridge Biomedical Campus's position, contributing to its continued expansion and sustainability."

It was anticipated that the station and related infrastructure would require construction, which would result in the temporary loss of 0.26 hectares of mature trees and 0.45 hectares of broadleaved planted woods.

The Department of Transportation has given the go-ahead to construct the Cambridge South station and make upgrades at Shepreth Junction.

Additionally, work will be done to upgrade access by establishing a new connection between existing lines at Hills Road.
