Edinburgh council budget and housing revenue proposals approved

EDINBURGH: A budget that aims to "get the basics right" and make Edinburgh a "cleaner and greener city" has been approved by council members. (Reported by news source)

An increase of 3% in council housing rents was decided upon after taking into account the effects of two years of rent freezes, rising costs, and the fact that (based on 3% rent increases over the next ten years) approximately 86% of existing homes could be brought up to the Energy Efficiency Standard for Social Housing (EESSH2) over the course of the business plan and that c.2,400 social rented homes could be delivered.

To assist tenants, especially those who are unable to access benefits, a Tenant Hardship Fund will be established. The housing, homelessness, and fair work committee will be given further information about the fund on March 9.

The beloved King's Theatre will also receive funds to ensure its continuation, as suggested by all major parties, with £3 million put aside.
